In my lifetime, I have met and associated with an array of insurance agents. Having worked in the insurance industry myself, I know that many agents are simply taught to sell, but are deficient in other areas.
Blake Kiss is not your typical agent. He specializes in the confusing area of Medicare health coverage and is the most intelligent, knowledgeable, and understandable agent that I have ever met—high praise coming from one who spent years working in the industry.
I don’t have to tell you that Medicare health plans can be extremely complex, and many of you have learned for yourselves that, “the devil is in the details”. Blake has an impressive comprehension of Medicare Supplements, Medicare Advantage, and Part D Prescription Drug Plans, and he knows the details.
But what’s better, is that Blake communicates in a way that is easy to understand. He doesn’t just sell insurance. Blake’s approach is to educate so that you can feel confident when making your coverage decisions.
Furthermore, retention and customer service are among his top priorities. When you have those pesky claims issues, he is always willing to step in and help. His patience and willingness to spend time with his clients are evidence of his attachment to them—He really does care!
Blake also strives to be easily accessible year-round especially during the Medicare enrollment period. When you want to review policy changes, or explore different options, your kitchen table becomes his office—he’s willing to come to you at your convenience.
In addition to the Medicare necessities, Blake also offers final-expense life insurance, hospital cash plans, short-term nursing home coverage, and cancer insurance. He chooses to represent companies and products that cater to the needs of the senior population.
A little about Blake’s background:
Blake was raised in upper-East Tennessee, Daniel Boone country, just across the Southern Virginia border. For a time, his father ran a small insurance agency in Kingsport but eventually decided to work from home. Every so often, his dad would recruit Blake and his brother to help with menial office tasks, like stuffing envelopes.

While Blake had some exposure to the industry, he didn’t immediately pursue an insurance career. After graduating from Daniel Boone High School in Gray, Tennessee his desire to serve others took him to the Washington D.C. Metro Area.
While there, he worked as a volunteer among a wide range of people. He spent time serving alongside the disadvantaged in Southeast D.C., and the nation’s wealthiest in Potomac and Bethesda Maryland. He learned how to build relationships of trust with folks across the socio-economic spectrum. He also learned to listen to, and recognize the needs and desires of others—skills that would serve him well.
Blake returned from D.C. in 2006. In 2007 he left for college. He studied English and Art at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, VA, and graduated with honors in 2010. His intention was to enroll in law school, but after a brief internship with a public defender, he decided against a legal career.
His father, who had never pushed Blake into the industry, suggested that he obtain an insurance license while planning his next step, and Blake did just that.
In 2011, Blake was hired by a major insurance company. He enjoyed success there, but after four years he began to re-evaluate his career goals and aspirations. He greatly appreciated the security, training, and mentorship that the company provided, but he also recognized the importance of being able to offer products from a variety of companies.
It takes guts to move out of the comfortable protections of a large company. Being a family man, Blake knew that the transition to an independent agent could be risky, and burdensome. Yet, with the blessing of his supportive wife, he ventured out on his own.
Living in Christiansburg, Blake now focuses on serving Montgomery, Giles, Floyd, Pulaski and Radford. However, he will, and does do business outside these areas as well. We have our health insurance with him and we highly recommend him to our local readers.
Maybe it’s been a few years since you’ve had an in-home plan review, or perhaps you’re just curious about other coverage options and you want a straight-forward, no pressure assessment.

At the very least, call Blake this September to schedule an appointment for the upcoming Medicare enrollment season.
Blake’s business card is above but if you, or anyone you know, are either on Medicare or approaching retirement, please share this post with them as we can assure you that they, and you, will not find a better, more caring, insurance agent in South West Virginia!
