Yes folks, we have checked the dictionary and there is such a term as ‘over-exaggerating.’ Basically, one can use the words ‘over-exaggerating’ in place of outright lying, especially when one could be in a legal tangle.
In interviews with several news organizations over the weekend, Lochte tried to explain his position in the “Tangle in Rio.” To use an appropriate phrase, the explanation didn’t hold water! At the same time, he appeared to be slowly getting caught in the weeds and struggled to stay afloat towards the end of the interviews. Of course, Lochte is small fry compared to larger fish in the ocean of concealment and, being not as practiced as your average politician, despite legal coaching, seemed to flounder.
One of the greatest liars of all time is, of course, Pinocchio, who nose you may recall got a little longer when he lied. I looked hard at Lochte’s face during the various interviews and did not discern any lengthening of his nose but it did appear that the more he talked the deeper he sank.
I have never met anyone who can honestly say they have never lied. Governments, Kings, politicians, everyone else on this planet has lied at one time or another. The only ordinary person I know of who refused to lie when the going got hot was Joan of Arc and after being asked to recant three times was burnt at the stake.
So, is it time to forgive Lochte? Yes. Lochte should not be burnt at the stake for his stupidity and immaturity, even if he is 32, but his actions certainly warrant some penance. We will have to wait and see what the USOC hands down.
While the world is condemning Lochte, some self-reflection would not go amiss.
